Keyword Placement on Your Website to Maximize SEO

It is a common misconception that keywords are the, erm, ‘key’ to SEO.

Whilst they are important to the extent that they help to inform the search engines what your page is actually about, that is about as far as it goes.

It is important, however, to make sure that the SEO keywords which you do use are used correctly and in the right place – if not, those search engines can get annoyed and send back down the list of results.

Search engine algorithms have come a long way in the last few years and are continuously being updated. Once upon a time, sprinkling your website with keywords was the best way to appear near the top of the search engine rankings. These days, the algorithms have been refined and there are many other factors that are taken into consideration by the search engines such as Google. So whilst keywords are not as important as before, they are still worth adding in – in the right place.

A few strategically placed SEO keywords are much more effective than many un-strategically placed ones, so where should you be concentrating?

Where to put keywords

The main places where keywords should be added are in mainly the SEO tags:

  • In the URL if possible
  • Title tag
  • SEO metadata
  • H1 tag
  • Body content
  • Image ALT tag

The URL is the address of the page. By including SEO keywords in the URL it is not only good for your website visitors, but also for your SEO.

The page titles and H1 tags are the best way to advertise what is on your website page, and the search engines understand this. They therefore give more importance to the words which are used as page titles, headers and sub-headers.

SEO metadata is the text which appears when you search on Google. It is vital that this data gives ‘searchers’ accurate information about what they will find if they follow your link. By misleading searchers, you will not only frustrate people, it will make your website in-effective and the search engines can send you plummeting down the results lists.

Adding SEO keywords into your body content is another great way of getting them onto your web page, but it is important to make them as natural sounding as possible. The over stuffing of keywords or unnatural sounding text can have the opposite effect on your SEO as your website will be seen as spam. This may be difficult at first but it does get easier with practice.

It is always a good idea to include images on your web page, apart from anything else to break up the content and make it easier to read. You can add an image tag (the words which appear when you hover over the image) including your keywords for an extra bonus.

Knowing your SEO keywords and the best places to put them is essential for good SEO and the best results possible in the search engines. So make sure that you do the research to get the right words, and then place them in the right spot and you will see your website growing in success.
