What is Google Webmaster Tools?

Any business who wants to make a success of themselves online needs to firstly understand how to drive traffic to their website, and secondly have access to data which can help them to improve this.

It is not good enough anymore to just have a website or social media page, as competition is fierce and being found online, and standing out is the key to online success.

Google webmaster tools is a free Google software which gives you continually updated data about the technical side of your website, meaning that you can spot problems, understand the traffic which is coming to you better, and communicate with Google.

So you have a new website and want to get set up with Google webmaster tools.

The first thing that you need to do is get a Google account. Google webmaster tools sign up is the same as an email account – so if you already have an email account with Google you can use this. If you go to www.google.com and click on ‘You’, you can set up an account.

To get your Google webmaster tools install, you now need to go to http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools and sign in with your Google account. Find ‘Add a site’ and click on this to add the URL of your website address.

If you have a Google analytics account as well (which you should, if you are serious about driving traffic to your site), it is recommended that you use the same email account.

The next step is to them verify that the website is yours. Google gives you a number of different options to do this, but the easiest is to use your Google Analytics account – but please note that for you to use this, you will need to be an administrator of your Google Analytics account.

It is worth noting that after you have set up your Google webmaster tools account, it can take a couple of days for the data to start to appear.

Now What?

Now that you have signed up for Google webmaster tools, what next?

The first thing that you should do is set up a sitemap. This is where you will tell Google what pages you have on your website, which makes it easier for Google to find and give you information – and it is also important for SEO. You can do this via the WMT Interface.

Now that you have all of this set up, you will start to receive data from Google which can tell you information such as where your site is being linked to, from, how many people are coming to your site on mobile devices and helping you to improve your appearance when you come up in a Google search.

Having a Google webmaster tools and Google analytics account is essential for anyone who is wanting to increase traffic to their website – and increase the quality of traffic to their website. This vital information can make all the difference and is easy and quick to set up.
