What are the Best Social Media Management Tools

There are dozens of social media management tools out there. Buffer and Hootsuite are two that I use regularly and I recommend them for different reasons as you'll see.

What is a social media management tool?

A social media management tool is a system that allows you manage all of your social media channels in one place through a common dashboard. Some of the common features of a social media management system include the following:

  • Analyze your posts' performance – determine which are getting the likes, shares, and comments. This is commonly referred to as "engagement".
  • Organize and plan future posts - Outline posts you'll want to make in the future; sort of a like a sketch pad where you can list ideas for future posts and come back later to write them and add images or videos.
  • "Listen" to other people's accounts – this is a form of monitoring so you keep tabs on your competitors or make sure that you're in tune with what is happening in your industry.
  • Schedule posts – maybe you're going on vacation or you know you'll be busy for a period of time and you want to automate your posting.

Why is Hootsuite a good social media management tool?

Hootsuite is great for listening. It allows you to monitor competitor accounts and identify trends online. You can schedule posts with Hootsuite, but it's not as detailed as Buffer's capabilities. Hootsuite offers free, pro, and enterprise accounts depending on the number of your accounts.

Why is Buffer a good social media management tool?

Buffer is great for scheduling. It allows you to really fine-tune the release times of your social media posts. Unlike Hootsuite, Buffer doesn't offer you the ability to listen to other accounts.
